Mrs. Evelyn P. Brown, 81

Mrs. Evelyn Phillips Brown was born August 13, 1935 to the late Annie Vester Carnegia and Charlie J. Phillips in Brooks County, Georgia. She was reared by her grandparents, William and Janie Carnegia. She attended Sandhill School in Brooks County, which later become Cook County Training School. She developed an early love for basketball as a teenager and became an honorable player.  As a teenager, she met and joined in holy matrimony with John H. Brown, Sr. on May 9, 1954. They were inseparable for 56 years when he passed away in 2010. She passed from this earthly life on January 2, 2017. She was also preceded in death by her oldest son, John H. Brown, Jr.

For many years, she was employed by Cecil Farms (Valdosta Plant Company) as a supervisor.  Most recently she was employed since 2001 with the Foster Grandparents Program and Cook County Headstart. She was affectionately known as “Granny Brown”.

She was a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Adel and served on the usher board and the kitchen committee.

Basketball was her game and she loved every minute of it. The team bus would often pick her up for games as she was known as the team’s champ and she thought of them the same way. Her support and love will always be remembered.
