MRS. GARFIELD OLIVIA BENNETT HAILEY

Garfield Olivia Bennett Hailey, 84, was the eldest child of five born in Chesterfield, South Carolina on November 13, 1932 to the late Clara Bennett Shaw and the late James Harrell.  She departed this earthly life on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, surrounded by her loving children.

Although Clara and James were her parents, our Mother grew up in a home filled with love and support provided by her Aunt Allie and Daniel “Doc” Rorie.  She was raised with their children Wilson Rorie, Walter James Rorie “WJ”, Vernon Rorie Sr., Laylon Rorie, Lessie Haynes and Carrie Goss.  She was very close to Aunt Allie and Uncle “Doc” who taught her to love the Lord and always respect herself and the family.  Mother often talked about the Bible and how important it was to pray.  The Lord’s Prayer was her favorite prayer.  She always prayed at six o’clock in the morning and evening and at noon.  Her favorite saying was “it’s prayer time”.

She attended the South Carolina Public Schools.  She also furthered her education at South Piedmont Community College in Wadesboro. Her work career spans over 30 years of service to Reeves Brothers industries and as a local hair stylist.

Mom moved to Wadesboro in 1948 with her uncle and aunt Jasper and Evelyn Bennett.  She had no idea that in this small town in a little restaurant called Henry’s Place that she would find her soul mate.  Our mother met the love of her life, Lucius W. Hailey, Sr.   She saw our father when he walked in the restaurant.  Daddy knew when he saw her for the first time that she was going to be his wife.  After an engagement, Mom put her Easter dress in the cleaners.  On April 19, 1949, Dad came to her house in a taxi.  They traveled to Chesterfield, SC and got married.  Needless to say, Lucius and Garfield was a loving couple.  They enjoyed fifty-nine years of marriage.  Her family was her joy.  Mom was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother until the end.

Mom and dad were faithful servants at Kesler Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church and were active members for more than forty-five years.  Mom served on the Board of Trustees and Deaconess Ministry.  She and dad were both members of the choir.  Mom also served as Sunday school treasurer and class leader.  Mom attended bible study faithfully.

When Dad was diagnosed with Parkinson Disease in 2008, it was Mom who took care of him.  Our mother was the essence of what it means to be a “Virtuous Woman.”  She was loving, God-fearing, compassionate, gentle and beautiful.  Mom was an avid letter writer.  Everyone looked forward to receiving her wise, uplifting, handwritten notes.  Our Mom always put God first even in the midst of physical struggles. She remained this way until the end of her life.

Mom was preceded in death by husband, Lucius Hailey, Sr. and her son, Ray A. Hailey.  She leaves to cherish her memories, five daughters, Irene (Maurice) Harrington of Lilesville, NC, Evangeline Morning, of Winston-Salem, NC, Shirley Floyd, of Charlotte, NC, Clarett Adams, of Wadesboro, NC and Wanda (John) Little, of Charlotte, NC; four sons, Dennis (Shirley) Hailey, of Charlotte, NC, Lucius (Tammy) Hailey Jr., of Climax, NC, Christopher (Vivian) Hailey, of Charlotte, NC and Curtis (Toforya) Hailey, of Wadesboro, NC.  Family was important to our parents so they raised three of their grandchildren, Torrey Hailey, of Atlanta, Georgia, and Dr. Karen M. (Carlos) Roseboro of Kernersville, NC, and Marquis Liles, of Monroe, NC.  Mom had twenty-seven grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; two sisters Claretha (Julius) Hooks and Catherine Bailey, both of Cheraw, SC; four sisters-in-law, Mildred Allen, of Wadesboro, NC, Effie Watson, of Camden New Jersey, Etta Shaw, of Raleigh, NC, Lydia Hailey, of Salinas, California; three brothers-in-law Ray (Josephine) Hailey, of Wadesboro, NC, Ernest Hailey, of Camden, New Jersey, Alexander (Helena) Hailey, of Wadesboro, NC.  Mom served as mother figure for Cheryl Banks, Rev. Andrew Chambers, Tony Diggs, and Zatangi “Desha” Melton; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Enjoy the ride to Heaven Mom! You have earned your wings to fly away!

The Homegoing Celebration was held on Saturday, January 28, 2017, 3:00pm, Kesler Chapel AME Zion Church, Wadesboro, North Carolina.  Burial  followed in Westview Memorial Park, Highway 74-West, Wadesboro, North Carolina.

To the Hailey Family, I was so sorry to hear of the death of your mother. I remember both of your parents. The hope you have in God's word will bring comfort and peace to you during this difficult time. The scripture that helps me since I lost my parents is John 5:28,29. May you continue in prayer.
