Mr. Heardes D. Butler, Jr.

Services for Mr. Heardes Delon Butler, Jr. were held Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Goodman-Pickens Elementary School in Goodman, MS, officiated by Rev. Byron Butler and Elder Floyd Butler.

Interment immediately followed at Old Pilgrim Rest M. B. Church in Durant, MS.

Heardes Delon Butler, Jr. affectionally known as “Jr” was born on December 14, 1958, in Chicago, IL to Charlie Mae and Heardes Butler, Sr. Heardes Butler, Jr. made his transition to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at 5:40 a.m.  

He was preceded in death by his Mother Charlie Mae Butler, his grandparents: Charlie & Josie Mae Howard and Henry & Mattie Pearl Butler; five Aunts: Dorothy Pearl, Elsie, Hazelean, Brenda and Linda and two Uncles: Malcolm and Brady Butler.  

Heardes Jr. was the first born, of three children, but known as his Mother’s “Big Baby” until God called her home in July 2014. His childhood began in Golden Gate on Eberhart Street, in Chicago, IL.  He attended W.E.B Dubois Elementary.  In 1972, after he moved to Durant, MS to live with his Grandmother, he attended Durant Attendance Center (DAC), where he was an outstanding member of the track, football and basketball teams. After graduating from DAC in 1976, he furthered his education at Alcorn State University, in Lorman, MS, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Social Service in 1980.  Becoming an Alcorn Brave, was one of his most prideful moments.   

After graduating from Alcorn, Heardes Jr. decided to move back to Chicago; where he started his career at Southwest Forest as a machine operator. On June 23, 1982, he married his high school sweetheart, Katie and to this union three children was born:  Martes, Kenyarda and DeShawn. 

After working, at Southwest Forest for many years, he decided to change careers. He worked for different Social Service Agencies during the years, but he found his true love with Boy Scouts of America in 1998.   He served as the District Director for Boy Scouts of America for many years and received many awards and certifications. 

Heardes, Jr. accepted Christ at an earlier age; and to know him, was to know that he loved praising, ministering and singing God’s word.  Heardes Jr. was ordained as a deacon in 1998 at Progressive Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Roy R. Brown in Aurora, IL.  He was later reordained at Calvary Baptist Church in Glenwood, IL under the leadership of Pastor Kelon Duke.  Because of his love for Christ, no matter where he was located, he always kept a church home. After moving back south, he joined Christ Tabernacle Church, where he was under the covenant of Pastor Hosea J. Hines in Jackson, MS. 

Heardes, Jr. later married Diane Cook in May of 2007. 

Heardes, Jr. was deeply loved and admired by many. He was compassionate and loving to all and never met a stranger.  All knew him affectionally for his loud mouth but “Big Heart”. He loved his family and friends dearly! 

Heardes, Jr. leaves to cherish his memories: his three sons, Martes Sheard (Sara) of Lacrosse, WI, Kenyarda Cordell Butler of Van Nuys,CA and Jimele DeShawn Butler of Lacrosse, WI; five grandchildren, Makaylah, Makenzie, Makirah, Martes Jr. and Malik Sheard; father, Heardes Butler, Sr. of Durant, MS,; one sister, Johanna Scrabrough of Durant, MS; one brother, Vincent Butler, Sr. (Latanya) of Fort Smith, AR; one aunt, Albertine Mosley of Chicago, IL; Three uncles, Henry Butler, Jr. of Durant MS, Mac A. Butler (Sadie his Special Aunt) of Glenwood, IL and Floyd Butler (Yvonne) of Ellenwood, GA.; special nephews and niece, Antonio, Detrick and Dominque of Durant, Ms.; his Angel Danyel McCants of Milwaukee Wi, and a host of nieces, nephew, cousins and friends.
