Velvet Bailey Graves, 94, a resident of North Chicago, IL passed away on January 29, 2017 in Lake Forest, IL.  

She was born in Randolph County, Alabama to George and Eliza Heard Bailey of Wedowee, Alabama.  She had six siblings, Oran (deceased), Willie (deceased), Cloris (deceased), Heard Deceased), Emma (deceased) and John T. 

Velvet was employed by The Goodwin/Simmons Family for over 60 years.  She began with the family in 1947 in Anniston, Al, then moved with them to Washington, DC in 1953 and Lake Forest, IL in 1956. In Illinois, she married Robert Graves in 1961.  The couple lived in Waukegan, IL.  Mr Graves died in 1985.  

She was devoted to her own family, often going back to Alabama to visit her brothers and sisters and their extended families. Her family often had reunions which Velvet always found great joy in attending. She was always very supportive of her family members, particularly her nieces and nephews, often having them visit or even live with her in her house in Waukegan.

Funeral ceremony for Mrs.Velvet Graves,94, of Chicago, IL (formerly of Anniston) will be held Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 1PM at the Goodson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lewis Kates, Officiating. Burial will follow in Eden Hills Cemetery. Viewing will be Saturday  two hours prior to service in the chapel. Goodson Funeral Home directing.

Velvet was a loving member of the Goodwin/Simmons family, having been with them throughout the childhood of the Goodwin children, Andy, Barton and Charlotte.  She played an active role in their upbringing and was a steady fixture in their household and lives. 

Throughout her life, Velvet was active in the church. She was devout in her belief and was a dedicated reader of the Bible. 

Remaining in her employ until her death in 2009, Velvet was a devoted employee, companion and friend of Mrs. Richard Simmons. For the last ten years, Velvet has lived with Mrs. Elfreda Sproul of North Chicago.  Elfreda has been a warm and loving friend of Velvet’s since 1968. Velvet is survived by one brother, John T., and a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends.
