Lloyd Walter Bennett, Jr., of New Orleans (aged 81), died at home on Wednesday, February 1, 2017. He was born on August 25, 1935 in New Orleans to Lloyd Walter Bennett, Sr. and Gabriela Dobard Bennett, both of New Orleans. In 1959 he married the late Patricia Marie St. Julien from whom he later divorced. Of this union were born two children, Terese Bennett Favorite (Steve) of New Orleans and Timothy Bennett (Janice) of Stafford, Texas. He then married the late Eliana Guerreiro Ramos and had two daughters, Gabriela and Xochitl Bennett. He is survived by his widow, Katherine Krejsa Bennett, two grandchildren, Etienne Favorite and Brittany Bennett, as well as numerous other family, friends and former co-workers. He will be greatly missed. Lloyd was proud to have served as quartermaster in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S S. Kearsarge aircraft carrier during the Korean War. He attended the Joseph A. Craig Elementary School and Joseph S. Clark High School in New Orleans, was granted degrees in art and art education from Xavier University of New Orleans, Tulane University and the University of Arizona. His work experience included graphic design and art consultation for Boeing, Chrysler and Bell Aerospace, but his real love was teaching. He spent 14 years with the Orleans Parish School District, more than 20 years on the art faculty of Xavier University of New Orleans, and also taught at Southern University of New Orleans, St. Elizabeth College and Monmouth University (both in New Jersey), the University of Texas at Brownsville, Winston-Salem University in North Carolina and Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri. An accomplished artist as well as an art educator, Lloyd's major works incorporated a blend of basic images that evoke the rich heritage of his forbearers, yet was clearly the work of a contemporary American artist. He received numerous grants, awards and scholarships and had numerous solo exhibitions in the United States and internationally. Recent works focused on the gods and spirits of African mythology. Per his wishes, Lloyd's remains have been cremated. Interment will take place at the Dobard Family Cemetery in Jesuit Bend, Louisiana at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in memory of Lloyd Walter Bennett, Jr. be sent to: Xavier University of Louisiana, PO Box 650658, Dallas, TX 75265-9915 or online at giving.html. Relatives and friends of the family; former co-workers are invited to attend a mass of Christian burial at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 2022 St. Bernard Ave., New Orleans on Thursday, February 9, 2017, at 10 a.m. Visitation with family and friends from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the church.
