Early Sunday morning, March 5, 2017 at the North Carolina State Veterans Home – Salisbury, North Carolina, James Edward Smith transitioned peacefully into the arms of the Lord.  Like a child, he had no fear for he knew in whom he believed, and understood it was grace and mercy that had kept him this long, and that God would shepherd him into eternity.

James Edward Smith was born on September 12, 1943 to James Thomas Smith and Jennie B. Tillman Smith in Lilesville, North Carolina.  His father, James Thomas, assured himself that all of his children would have a good Christian foundation by carry them to Sunday School and Sunday Morning service at Thomas Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.  James Edward confessed Christ at an early age and joined Thomas Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where he remained active until he graduated from Henry Grove High School in 1962.

In 1962 James enlisted in the United States Army, he was honorably discharged after 13 years of service.  James began his new career with then Trailways Bus Company, now Greyhounds Bus Company retiring after 36 years as a Bus Driver.  After retiring he knew his health was declining, he returned to Lilesville, North Carolina to be closer to his family.  Because of his illness it was concluded that the North Carolina State Veterans Home – Salisbury, North Carolina would be best for his needs.  While a resident at the NCSVH he actively participated in the activities there.  While a resident at the NCSVH James served as Vice President of the Resident’s Council.  He enjoyed attending the church services held Sundays at 2:00PM provided by the Trinity Baptist, Mocksville, North Carolina, the various entertainment groups, and of course playing bingo.

He leaves to cherish his memories his daughter, Lakeisha Feaster (Edwin) of Blythewood, South Carolina, children, Melisa McClurkin, Columbia, South Carolina, and Gene McClurkin, Chester, South Carolina, Grandchildren; Tyquan, Reginald, Regine, Justin; Great granddaughter: Moriah, Juanita Smith the mother of his children.  Three Sisters Thomasina S. Special extended siblings, the children of Mr. Charlie T. and Mollie Spencer. Special friends, Alex Gaddy, Murie Hightower, and Val Stinson.  A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The Homegoing Services were held on Thursday, March 9, 2017, 11:00am, Smith's Memorial Chapel, 604 Salisbury Street, Wadesboro, North Carolina.  Full military honors were given and interment will be at the Veterans Cemetery, Salisbury, North Carolina.
