Mary was born to Late James Kigathi Gitaru and Late Florence Waruga Kigathi on December 13, 1952 in Gitaru sublocation, Kikuyu Division, Kiambu, Kenya. Mary was loving mother to Florence Waruga and Jean Nyambura; mother-in-law to Derick Lindo and Corey Moss. Sister to Jane Nyambura Nyamu (husband Gabriel), the late Lewis Gitaru , the late Henry Ng’ang’a, Alfred Kamami (wife, Rachel Nyokabi), Roxana Wanjai, the late Stephen Kageche, Robert Ng’ang’a (wife, Grace Wanjeri) and David Njuguna (wife, Gaudentia Nzioki). She was also sister-in-law to Jane Wairimu Gitaru and Mary Njeri Ng’ang’a.

At an early age Mary became a member of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa where she was baptized and confirmed. Mary taught her family the importance of following Christ and putting Him first in all they do.

Mary attended Rungiri Primary School and Kajiado Secondary School. She pursued a secretarial course at The Government Secretarial College in Mombasa, Kenya. Her first job was at the Attorney General’s Chambers at Sheria House in Nairobi. She then was hired at the Kikuyu Constituency Office as a Personal Assistant to the MP, Sir Charles Njonjo. Finally, she worked at Caplan and Stratton Advocates in Nairobi until she retired.

Mary relocated to the United States of America in 2005. She moved to Virginia to be with her aunt, Alice Ngige, from 2006 – 2013. Naturally, she became an integral part of the Kenyan community in Richmond and a member of Goshen International Ministry. In 2013, Mary moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee to be close to her daughters and their families.

On the morning of April 14, 2017, Mary went to be with the Lord peacefully in her sleep in the home she shared with her daughter, Jean and her family. We thank God for Mary’s life, a life well lived.  She will be greatly missed!!

For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself.  For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord.  So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.  For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and of the living.

Romans 14:7-9
