Thurman Johnson was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee to the union of Ernest James and Myrtle Johnson on March 10, 1951. He was the oldest of three children. He accepted Christ at a very early age at Thankful Missionary Baptist Church of Chattanooga, TN. In his adult life, he joined New Hope Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of his cousin the late Rev. J. S. Hamilton where he has been a faithful member for over 40 years. Both of his parents, grandparents William T. and Maxie Robinson Connor and Gabe Connor, mother-in-law, Johnnie Mae Johnson, brother-in-law Alfred Jackson, and sister-in-law, Kathy Rutledge, all preceded him in death.  Family, friends, and all who knew him best affectionately knew Thurman as “TJ”. He was educated in the Chattanooga Public Schools where he claimed both classes of 1969 and 1970 of Howard High School. While attending Howard High School, he was a member of the “Marching 100” where he played the drums and cymbals. Thurman entertained the crowd by putting on a show and challenging the drum majors at each football game. After high school, he served two years in the United States Army. Upon completion of his military service, he was employed with Tennessee Valley Authority and TNT. He found his niche in construction as a building and concrete finisher and later retired from Labor’s Union 846 in 2015. Thurman was a very funny, outspoken, self-confident, and a no-nonsense kind of man. Yet he was loving, caring, a good provider and hard worker who loved his family and friends. He had a love for fashion, finding good deals at flea markets and yard sales, grilling, and sports especially the LA Lakers and San Francisco 49ers. He leaves a legacy of hard work, determination, and drive that will never fade as long as the legacy continues to live in his light. Thurman Johnson made his transition from labor to reward on Saturday, April 15, 2017 in Chattanooga, Tennessee at the age of 66.  He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife of 37 years, Vicky Johnson; daughter, LaToya Wellon-Johnson (Fiancé Juan Starling) and son, Thurman (Nikita Wellon-Johnson) both of Chattanooga; two grandsons, Nikko and Christian; two granddaughters Laila and Angela; two sisters, Cynthia Jackson of Nashville, TN and Karen Johnson of Chattanooga, TN; one uncle, Dr. Marshall (Jean) Robinson, two aunts, Edith Swafford and Janie Robinson, both of Chattanooga; two nieces, Deunna Bledsoe of Chattanooga and Cydya (Raymond) Williams of Clarksville, TN, Kyron Johnson of Detroit, MI. and Jason (Joselyn) Jackson of Memphis, TN, seven great nieces and nephews, one brother-in-law and five sisters-in-law; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

So very sorry to hear about your loved one. Sickness and death was not part of God's purpose for humans. Soon God will fulfill his purpose and make all things new. Revelation 21:3-5 is a guarantee of a better life for us and our loved ones. May the fond memories you have of Thurman sustain you during this time. For additional information and comfort from the scriptures please visit jw.org. Sincerely TL
