Fred “Scali” Saunders, 87
YOUNGSTOWN - A funeral service celebrating the life of Mr. Fred Saunders, 87, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mr. Saunders, affectionately known to his family and friends as “Scali,” departed this life on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, while surrounded by his loving family.
Fred Saunders was born Feb. 4, 1930, in Girard, a son of Luther and Cenonia Saunders.
He was a U.S. Army veteran who served his country during the Korean War. Scali retired from Youngstown Sheet & Tube after 33 years. He then went on to work as an electrician at General Motors Inc., from where he ultimately retired.
Fred served as a park commissioner of the Youngstown Board of Parks and Recreation. He was a devoted booster of The Rayen School, coached the Buckeye Elks baseball and McGuffey Bulldogs football teams and served as a mentor to many in his community. He was a lifelong member of the NAACP, as well as the A. Phillip Randolph Institute.
Scali was a devoted husband, loving father, exceptional grandfather, loyal brother, and a friend to many. He will be remembered as a kind and special gentleman who quietly helped anyone whenever given the opportunity. He was larger than life in so many ways and always there for anyone who needed him. He will be dearly missed.
His hobbies included travel with his fellow members of the Créme de la Créme club, of which he was a member for over 50 years. He enjoyed watching and attending sports events of all kinds and he never missed the annual Penn Relay track and field events held in Philadelphia. He also found great joy in his pastime of fellowshipping with his group of friends at McDonald’s, where they met for lunch that lasted through dinner six days a week and rested on Sundays.
He leaves to cherish his beloved memories, his loving and devoted children, Georgianna, Frederick, Kevin (Sherry), and Wilda Saunders, and Maurice (Johnnie) Stewart; five grandchildren, Johnathan, Natasha, Ashley, Marissa, and Brandi; his one and only great-grandchild, Alexis; his brother, Wilbert Saunders; his godchildren, Lester Woods, LaVerne (Harrell) Bournes, and Michael and Melissa Sims; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Virginia Ann Saunders; his brothers, Everett and John Van Saunders; and sisters Ruby Saunders and Gloria Copeland.
Friends may call Friday from    3 to 5 p.m. at the J.E. Washington Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church.
