    I am sorry for your loss, please accept my sincere condolences.     I worked with Sue as assistant director for Head Start in New Bern. She was so committed to helping those kids. My sincere condolences to out to her family. She was quite and amazing woman.

    I came into the Head Start program under the leadership of Mrs. Dorffeld. She was a great person to work with and was always encouraging her employees to better themselves. She and Lena Allen was joined at the hip as co-workers and friends. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sue Standley Dorffeld ,87, of Kinston formerly of New Bern and Raleigh died Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Lenoir Medical Center.

Her service is 9:30 AM, Thursday, May 11, 2017 at St. Paul Catholic Church 3005 Country Club Rd., New Bern.  The interment with military honors follows at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville.

Sue Dorffeld was born in Canton, Ohio and reared in Toledo, Ohio.  She graduate from the University of Toledo with a double major in Math and English and taught school in Michigan.  In 1953, she joined the U. S. Navy and was stationed in Pensacola, FL  where  she met and married a Marine pilot, Chuck Dorffeld.

Sue was very involved in the lives of her six children as a Scout leader, team mother, volunteer for numerous committees and non profit organizations at every duty station.  Sue taught school in many of the towns where they lived, wrote a column on the lives of "Waiting Wives" while Chuck was in VietNam.

Sue was the Director of Coastal Progress Head Start Program and promoter of  the Senior Services Programs in New Bern.  She and Chuck moved to Raleigh where she was employed for the law firm that helped military retirees obtain a  N. C. State tax exemption on their retirement pay.

She is survived by her children, Joe (Janette) of Arizona, Bob (Jules), Knightdale,NC, John (Stephanie) of Raleigh, NC, Ann Predaris (Steve) of New Bern, Ruth Stout (Gray) of Burlington, NC and Captain Mary Lewellyn (David) of Millington, TN eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pat Malecki and Bridget Lorenz (Ini) of Florida.
