Mr. Gary Anthony Brinson, 59

Gary Anthony Brinson departed his earthly home and entered into eternal rest on Saturday, May 27, 2017 after a short period of illness.

He was the oldest of three children born to the late Doris Jeanette Stephens Brinson and Frank Douglas Brinson. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Gayle F. Brinson Crump.

Although Gary was born in Quitman, GA, he also had the privilege of being raised in California. Gary attended private Catholic school until high school, when he entered the public school system. He furthered his education by attending Tuskegee Institute. After completing 1yr. of general studies, he went on to enroll in Albany State University for another year of study.

Gary served his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corp on April 26, 1979. He proudly served 4yrs and rose to the rank of Sergeant, until his honorable discharge on April 25, 1983.  Subsequently, he served in the Reserves until March 7, 1985. Gary received such honors as: Primary Specialty Rifleman (3yrs 6mos); awarded various Decorations, Medals, Badges, Citations, Ribbons, Meritorious Master Sergeant, Expert Rifle Badge, Certificate of Achievement, Good Conduct Medal and Meritorious Unit Commendation.

He was employed with the DC Department of Corrections in October 1983. Gary retired as a Major, in April 2008. During his correctional career, it was obvious that Gary spent the majority of his time in prison (smile). Not only did he find a job there but in April 1984 he found the love of his life, Toni Maria Britton Brinson who also worked at the prison. After dating approximately 14 years, they “tied the knot” on June 18, 1997. A wonderful union took place with the merger of Gary’s children, Christina Angel Brinson (McNair), Phillip Anthony Britton and Racquel Nicole Hairston, all to make a blessed family nucleus. After retiring, Gary moved back to Quitman in 2008.

The expanse of Gary’s accomplishments, affiliations and volunteer deeds are noteworthy and include:  Member of the Mason’s Hairam Lodge #4 PHA of Washington DC, Associate member of Dumfries-Triangle Rescue Squad (3yrs until 2008) and member of the Dumfries Triangle Lions Club. Gary even set a record with the Lions Club when his joining was so highly sought after that unexpectedly, he became the only member who had been inducted in an airport in Reno, Nevada by the Lions Club’s District Governor.

Those left to rejoice in his memory: devoted and loving wife, Toni Maria Britton Brinson, Quitman, GA; two daughters, Christina Angel Brinson McNair (James), Woodbridge, VA and Racquel Nicole Hairston, Virginia Beach, VA; son, Phillip Anthony Britton, Dumfries, VA; grandson, Keyen Seth Douglas Coates, Woodbridge, VA; brother, Douglas Angelo Brinson (Lakyesha), Quitman, GA; sister, Patricia A. Horne, Quitman, GA; numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Beulah Missionary Baptist Church in Quitman with Pastor Walter Mays officiating. Burial followed in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman.
