Reverend James Calvin Sturkey, Jr. transitioned into eternal life on July 24, 2017 at his home with his beloved wife of 23 years, Mary Ruth Sturkey, by his side.

Born on November 29, 1933, he was the son of the late Deacon James C. Sturkey, Sr. and Rosa Lee Sturkey. Reverend Sturkey attended school at Martha Dendy Elementary and Bell Street High. He moved to Louisiana and worked on oil rigs for many years. He then returned to Clinton as his final earthly destination. Reverend Sturkey was a member of Mount Cowell Missionary Baptist Church in Joanna, SC. Upon his acceptance of the call to ministry, Reverend Sturkey was licensed and ordained. He served as pastor of Scurry Springs Missionary Baptist Church for 9 ½ years. During his years as pastor, Reverend Sturkey was faithful to the body of Christ, the St. Vaughnville Baptist Association and surrounding churches. When visiting other churches, Reverend Sturkey would always ask others to “cancel any plans they may have and come worship with us at Scurry Springs”. He was predeceased by his parents; one brother, Tommy Sturkey of New York; two stepsons, Marvin Sturkey of Louisiana and John Sullivan of Laurens, SC. Left to cherish his memories are his devoted wife, Mary; one brother, Levester (Helen) Sturkey of Clinton; one sister, Mary Alice (Horace) Ferguson of Akron, Ohio; a devoted friend and neighbor, Mattie Watson, who (in Reverend Sturkey’s words) was ‘like a daughter they never had’; a loving ‘God-daughter’, Pastor Minnie L. Bluford; 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Reverend Sturkey will also be missed by many in the church body and the community.
