Sterling Marc Carter, 73, a resident of Sierra County, died on Friday, January 5, 2018.  He was born in Big Spring, TX on June 17, 1944 to Temp and Maxine (Kincaid) Carter.  His family moved to Sierra County in 1957 where they began a ranching legacy at the San Jose Ranch north of Truth or Consequences.  He graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1962.  While attending New Mexico State University he met the love of his life - Judith Ruminer.  They married in 1963 and were married for 55 years.  They started a family while he finished getting his Bachelor of Science degree in Ag Economics.

After finishing college in 1966, Sterling began running the family ranch but also worked many other jobs.  He was a science teacher, county commissioner, trapper, construction worker and fence contractor.  In 1979 the family began operating another ranch in the Gila National Forest near Winston.  Soon thereafter, the Carter family began Black Range Guide and Outfitting Service to go along with the cattle ranching.

Sterling was active within the agricultural community, Farm Bureau and in countless other capacities.  He was a president of the New Mexico Council of Outfitters and Guides.  He was also instrumental in starting the Winston Country Church.

Sterling’s priority throughout all these years however, was his wife and children and grandchildren.  Every member of his family felt like they were “the favorite” and knew his unconditional love.  He was a very good friend to many and everyone he met he treated with respect and as an equal.  He made everyone feel comfortable and as if they belonged to his family.

Sterling is survived by his wife, Judith; children - Loretta Rabenau (William), Chane Carter (Amy), Kristie Hawkins (Ray), and Brian Carter (Jolie).  Loretta’s children are Dawson Yarbrough(Danielle), Jacy Welty(Doug) and Clarella “Clara”.  Chane’s children are Carlin, Corbin, Cason, Alex, Aubrie, Lindsey Mann, Andy Mann(Amanda)and Patti Mann.  Kristie’s children are Kelsie Cochran (Cru), Lane Forrister (Amanda), Kandes Goss(Kyle), Ray, and Hannah.  Brian has one daughter Marquetta.  Sterling and Judi have a whole passel of great grandkids.  Sterling’s siblings are Kenna Madlyn Scott and Michael Temp Carter.  He is preceded in death by his granddaughter Kensie Bell Forrister and his parents.

Matthew 7:16 says “Ye shall know them by their fruits…”.  This is certainly a bible verse that meant a lot to Sterling and how he lived his life.

Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at 11:00 AM at the Chloride Cemetery with Pastor Steve Griffith officiating. Serving as Casket Bearers will be Carlin Carter, Corbin Carter, Cason Carter, Dawson Yarbrough, Lane Forrister, Kyle Goss, Cru Cochran and Doug Welty.  A potluck gathering will follow at the Winston Community Center.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations in Sterling’s honor may be made to the Winston Country Church, ATTN: Loretta Rabenau, HC 30 Box 514, Winston NM 87943.

Judith, we're so sorry to hear about the loss of your loving husband. May you find strength and comfort from the words of Psalms 34:18. It reads: “Jehovah is close to the brokenhearted; He saves those who are crushed in spirit." Our loving God is there for us if we ask for his help (1 John 5:14). He didn't intend for us to grow old and die. He thus has made the SURE promise of a resurrection RIGHT HERE ON EARTH when it is restored to a beautiful paradise (Psalms 37:9-11, 29; Acts 24:15; Isaiah 55;11). Can you see yourself welcoming back to life your loved ones? What a joy it will bring all of us. You can go online to JW.ORG and find out more about this resurrection.

Dear Carter family, I am so sorry to have read of the recent death of your loved one Sterling. Please accept my most sincere condolences. May you find the comfort from the Scriptures at John 5:28,29 where Jehovah God promises a resurrection of our loved ones through his son Christ Jesus. And then the wonderful hope in the near future to the end of all the causes for our sufferings including sickness and death promised at Revelation 21:3-5. When I've lost loved ones these Scriptures have comforted me as I hope they will help your family also. In your time of need may God's loving arms surround your family during this most difficult time of your lives. Please accept my deepest sympathy on your loss.

My heart goes out to you and your family at this very sad time, Judy. I remember a long time ago when you and I were freshmen and suite mates at NMSU. When you and Sterling started dating, I thought you two made such a cute couple and had such a loving and enviable relationship. That loving relationship continued over many years. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
