Mrs. Shirley Grace French died peacefully in her home in Elephant Butte, New Mexico on Monday, January 15, 2018 at the age of 91.

Shirley is survived by her children:  Mary Ann (French) Cheney, Texas; Gordon Blair French, II, Washington; Susan Cae (French) Myers, Alabama; and Rock Dene French, Colorado.  She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Gordon Blair French in 2012.

Shirley was born on April 12, 1926 in Ellicottville, NY to Agatha and Mace French. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science and became a R.N. and then an Army nurse.  She married Gordon French, an Army friend of her brother in 1950. They lived in Rolla, Missouri while Gordon finished his B.S. and M.S. degrees. Shirley and Gordon had 4 children and lived in Missouri, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, California, Colorado, Canada, Wyoming, and New Mexico.  Every summer while the children were growing up, they traveled and camped in a new National Park from Florida to Nova Scotia and Colorado to Banff and any parks in between.  Her children remember her as a loving, self-sacrificing, strong woman who encouraged them to pursue their goals.

Shirley was an outstanding surgical nurse and was accomplished at sewing, knitting, hunting, fishing and cooking, winning the NY State Fair Bread category one year.  She gardened, canned, and prepared fish and game expertly.  As a mother of 4, she was very involved in PTA even serving as President at their school one year.  She was passionate about nursing and worked in surgery, on hospital floors, at doctor’s offices, and even private duty nursing.  Although while the children were young, when she worked at all, she only worked nights so she could be at home when they returned from school every day.

Shirley will be cremated and her remains will be flown back to NJ to be placed in her husband’s family plot.  Her children commend her soul into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The family would like to thank Tammy Guin for her dedication and tender care of Shirley during the last few years.

Shirley (and Gordon) were two of the finest people I have known, it was always a pleasure to see either or both. They have earned a special place wherever they have rejoined, and we know they both were welcomed simply: "Well done, thy good and faithful servants, well done." Godspeed.

We’re saddened to hear about your recent loss. It surely is a very difficult time; but we both hope you can find some comfort in the words of Nahum 1:7 which reads: "Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of distress. He is mindful of those seeking refuge in him." Yes, you can rely completely on our Loving God. He also has made the SURE promise of a resurrection right HERE ON EARTH when it is restored to a beautiful paradise (Acts 24:15; Psalms 37:9-11, 29, Isaiah 55:11). Then death will be gone forever (Isaiah 25:8; Revelation 21:3,4) Going online at JW.ORG, We have found great Bible help as well as videos about this resurrection.
