Richard Alvin McNutt was born on February 16, 1965 in Truth or Consequences, NM and passed away on February 12, 2018 at Memorial Medical Hospital in Las Cruces, NM.

During his early years, the family lived in Hachita, NM and then Lordsburg, NM; where he attended grade school. Ricky spent most of his time in Winston with his grandparents, Alvin and Lear Howell. It was then that his grandfather nicknamed him “Ratchet” because if the funny way Rick walked. Rick always considered Winston his home. He returned to Winston permanently in 1978.

Ricky graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1983 in the same gymnasium where his grandmother Lear graduated in 1942 and his mother in 1963.

Following graduation, he worked as a DJ for KCHS and for a short period of time, for a radio station in Kermit, TX. But law enforcement was Rick’s passion. He moved to Deming, NM where he went to work for the Luna County Detention Center. His career span twenty-five years. He retired with the rank of Captain.

Rick had many hobbies in his life. While living in Lordsburg, he started riding motorcycles. He raced at the TT track in Deming with this Dad and Uncle Don.

After returning to Winston, he learned to play the guitar. His grandmother, Lear, gave him his first guitar when he was thirteen. He went on to learn to play over 10 different instruments.

He continued his “music career” by working as a DJ at two radio stations in Deming. He also played his guitar at various dances and any time anyone wanted to listen to him.

From there he took up photography. He and Robyn traveled the southwest taking pictures of trains and capturing shots of wildlife, particularly deer, elk and the annual arrival of the birds at Bosque Del Apache. He also did photo shoots of family gatherings, graduations and weddings. But his favorite photography subject was his granddaughter, Cailynn.

His most recent hobby was Ham radio. He and Robyn were active in several different ham radio clubs in the area. Rick and his ham buddies constructed several repeater stations and antenna towers. He finally decided he was too old to climb the towers any more, so he stayed on the ground and “supervised.”

Ricky was preceded in death by his grandparents Alvin and Lear Howell, Homer McNutt and Hester Whitmire; sister, Henrietta Jo Muncy; father, Jerry McNutt; and uncle, Richard (Dick) for whom Rick was named. He is survived by his mother, Robbie (John) Montgomery; sister, Sharon Renee (Travis) Luna; daughters, Kimberly McNutt (Ross Willey), Melissa McNutt; son, William McNutt; granddaughter, Cailynn Willey; partner and best friend, Robyn Johnson; uncle, Don McNutt and several cousins.

Pallbearers will be Travis Luna, Brandon Torres, Ross Willey, Jeff Finch, Larry Griggs and Pete Hamilton. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bill McNutt, Russell Freeman, Tim Zagorski, Bobby Parks, Patrick Johannic, Eddie Jo Gurulè, Sr. and John Montgomery.

A Viewing will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 4:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M. at the Kirikos Funeral Home Chapel. A Graveside service will be held on Ricky’s birthday, February 16, 2018 at 12:00 P.M. at the Dusty Cemetery. Ricky’s family welcomes their friends to join them for a pot-luck lunch at the WCC&D Community Center in Winston following the burial.

To the family, my heartfelt condolences for the loss of your loved one. As you cope with your loss, may you be comforted by the "Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort.”(2 Cor 1:3) One day soon, all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out. (John 5:28, 29) May these promises from God's word, the Bible give you comfort now and real hope for the future. My deepest sympathy.
