Sgt. 1st. Class-Retired, Carl L. Graves, 85, of Walnut Cove, died Sunday, February 11, 2018. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Rock Hill Baptist Church in Belews Creek. Burial with full military honors will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church.

On Sunday, February 11th, God in his infinite wisdom called Carl from labor to his reward.  He plucked a special flower from his garden.  This special flower was loved by everyone who knew him.   Scripture reads in 2nd Corinthians 5:8, To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.  Carl Leonard Graves was born on October 26, 1932 in Forsyth County, North Carolina to the late John M. Graves and Eliza Ann H. Graves. He was a dedicated husband to Ella Mae Graves for 59 years.  He attended and graduated from Carver High School in Winston Salem, North Carolina.  After graduating, he retired from the Staff First Class position with The United States Army in 1973 after having served for 22 years.  He then went on to work for Pep Boys Auto Service and Tire then transitioned to Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company Winston Salem, North Carolina was remained until 1989 when he retired.  In retirement Carl was able to spend more time with his various hobbies and skills.  He loved camping and fishing and was an excellent bowler and carpenter. Carl was a faithful member of Rock Hill Baptist Church where he served on the Trustee Board.  He was preceded in death by three brothers, Arthur, Floyd, and Waynard; two sisters, Mary Johnson, and Lillian Caldwell.  Left to cherish his beautiful memories is his wife, Ella Mae; one godson Dedric T. Gilliam and grandgod daughter, Khloe Gilliam; one sister, Jean Horton of Winston Salem, North Carolina; four brothers-in-law, Nathaniel (Josephine) Scales and Walter Scales of Walnut Cove, North Carolina, Sammy (Dorothy) Johnson and Connie Johnson of Winston Salem, North Carolina; seven sisters-in-laws; Maxine Lash and Sarah Lowe of Walnut Cove, North Carolina,  Mary Simmons of Kernersville, North Carolina, and Sharon (Lafayette) Hairston of Belews Creek, North Carolina and Nannie Chinn and Stella Cook of Winston Salem, North Carolina and Josephine Lowery of Kernersville, North Carolina.   A devoted friend Todd (Angie) Simmons, and a host of loving nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
