MILDRED BREEDLOVE COLE COOKE

Died on March 18, 2018 in the same house that she was born into, originally purchased in 1878 by her paternal Grandmother, Sarah Ellen Whitledge Cole, a Civil War widow.  She was born on May 7, 1920 to John Edward Cole Sr. and Beulah Breedlove Cole.  She was preceded in death by her parents JEC-1924 and BBC--1973, her husband of 46 years - Robert--1988, daughter Beth--2012, grandchildren William and Sarah Barnhill--1976, brothers; Charlie, John Edward, William and sisters Mattie and Edith.  She was the last surviving Granddaughter of Solomon Nixon Cole, PVT. CSA, Moore Co., NC Scotch Riflemen.  She graduated from Mangum High School in 1937 and Louisburg College in 1939.  She was honored in the summer of 1937, with her Mama (area WPA supervisor), to personally meet Eleanor Roosevelt.  She worked as office manager for Efird's Department Store prior to her marriage to Robert Eugene Cook in 1942.  She spent her life as a dedicated, wife Mama, homemaker and community/church worker. She was very active in her children's schools serving as grade mother and participated in the Rabbit Club, Home Demonstration Club, and 4-H Club.  She was a Watts Hospital Volunteer and worked voter registration.  She fostered children from the Raleigh Methodist Orphanage.  In addition to her family, her passion was baking, cooking and golf on tv.  One of her greatest joys was the month spent with her husband in Hawaii in 1979 to honor his retirement.  She is survived by sons Bobby (Jane) and Ed (Ginny), son-in-law Jimmy Barnhill (Beth), 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces/nephews/cousins.

The family gives special thanks to Virginia Veasey, Ann Young, Yvonne Wilkins, and Mama's nieces, Priscilla Coleman, Sandra Jones, and Kay Drake for their dedication and love to our Mama.  We further express our love and appreciation for the generosity, care, and love rendered by the late Anna Emerson Pope and the five generations of her descendants to the Cole Family spanning 124 years.  We thank Hayes Barton Baptist Church for providing television programing of its weekly live church service that provided our infirmed Mama the opportunity to attend church on Sunday in the comfort of her home.  And, we thank our God for giving us Mama to share her LOVE.

If one wishes to honor our Mama's memory, memorial donations may be made to her favorite charity, St. Jude's Children Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
