Roger Edward Sanders, 88, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2018 in Durham, NC.  He was born February 7, 1930 in Chicago, IL to the late Eugene and Catherine Sanders.  As a member of the Virginia Bar Association, Roger practiced family and general law at his own firm in Arlington and Fairfax County, VA where he spent most of his adult life before moving to Chapel Hill, NC.  He earned a BA from Indiana University and later earned an MA in Political Science from Georgetown University and a JD from George Washington University in Washington, DC.  Roger proudly served in the US Air Force and was a regular handball player at the Pentagon Athletic Center.

A devoted Christian, he loved his family and church community. While in Northern Virginia, Roger was an active participant at The Falls Church and later McLean Bible Church.  After moving to NC, he became involved at The Summit Church. 

He was known for his love of Bethany Beach; pets, politics and piano playing; and a good book (especially history books weighing a pound or more) and a good joke.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, April 21 at Waypoint Church, 6804 Farrington Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27517.

The family will receive relatives and friends immediately following the service for a luncheon reception at the home of Elizabeth Sanders located at 1154 Belfair Way, Chapel Hill, NC 27517.

Surviving: wife Elizabeth Nourse Sanders of Chapel Hill, NC; children Ellen Wright of Jefferson City, MO, Karen Hawks of Scappoose, OR, Gregory Sanders of Jefferson City, MO, Neal Sanders of Saint Louis, MO and Julie McBrierty of Chapel Hill, NC; 13 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his older brother Doug Sanders.
