Deacon Henry Veasley, 80, of 1660 Head Road, Madison, Georgia transitioned to eternal rest Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He was born to the late James and Ida Jones Veasley Mabry on September 17, 1937 in Madison, GA. He became a member and was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church at an early age. Henry received his education in Morgan County, Madison, GA at Burney Street Elementary and Pearl Street High Schools. It is at Pearl High that he played basketball and met his wife, Katherine Nickerson; they were joined in holy matrimony on August 4, 1956, just prior to his call to serve (drafted for two years) in the United States Army. After being honorably discharged he started making a living for his family by doing different types of employment. Henry loved working odd jobs with his dearly departed brother Frank (Hubbard) Veasley. They mended fences, hauled hay, catered barbeques, and helped to run a hunting camp every fall where they cooked some things that were more fun to taste than talk about. He was a worker in a brick factory, the Wellington Purington Cordage Mill, and a janitor for the WYTH Radio Station. The late Mr. Jim Small, the owner of the radio station, encouraged him to go to trade school. Thereafter, he became the first licensed electrician in Madison in 1972 and began his new career as a young electrician for the Jackson Brothers Electrical Company in Monroe, GA. Life began to quickly change for the better.

In 1972, the now late Deacon Clee Buggs suggested that he apply for the maintenance position at the U. S. Post Office. The wonderful hours there allowed the Henry Veasley Electrical Service to flourish. He firmly believed that with faith in God and hard work; all things were possible. Upon telling our neighbor Sis. Katie Brown about his dream of owning farmland for raising cattle and hunting; she said, “Ask the Lord for it, he will make a way and give it to you”. He took her advice and God did.

All of these accomplishments occurred while serving as a Deacon at Calvary Baptist Church where he spearheaded several vocation projects such as the first restoration of the steeple in 1976, morphing the basement into pastor’s study, fellowship, & kitchen area; the stained-glass windows installation and the Walk of Faith enclosed walkway. He served as the Church Treasurer for twenty-one years and chaired the Board of Deacons. Being a 32nd degree Prince Hall Mason was another love of his life. Under his leadership a Wheat Street lodge for Madison Sun #209 was built and flourished. In addition, he was the district treasurer for over twenty years, served on several state teams and joined the Athens Consistory. He and the other founding members saw a community rally together to make the Morgan County African American Museum, another joy of his, a reality. Other community endeavors included working on the first Habitat for Humanity house in the county and being the first African American volunteer fireman. And last, but by no means least, Henry, as did his other Veasley brothers, loved to hunt, fish, and till the land. There is more to tell; but, the best stories are told by the Author of his faith.

All but one sibling proceeded him in death, Mrs. Frances Parks of Athens, GA. He leaves to cherish his memories a wife of sixty-one years, Mrs. Katherine Veasley. They produced three children: Glenn, the eldest of Madison; Erica, the youngest of Madison; and Parris of Alamogordo, NM. Parris produced his two grand-daughters, Tiffany Veasley-Bullins of Flagstaff, AZ and Christina Veasley of Little Rock, AR. And Tiffany and Chris produced his only great grand daughter Mila. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Family visitation will be held Wednesday evening, April 11, 2018 at Bernard’s The Madison Chapel from 6:00-8:00 PM.
