Jonathan Eugene Washington, 67, departed this earth on Sunday, April 8, 2018. He was born April 14, 1950 to the late Bannie Louise Washington and Joe Pinnix. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Gary Washington and a very special uncle, Jimmie Washington.

Jonathan was a member of Greater First United Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Choir, Usher Board and the Culinary Ministry. He attended High Point City Schools and was a member   of the William Penn 1968 Junior Class where he was active in the infamous William Penn High School Marching Tiger Band. After High School, Jonathan went on to enlist in the US Air Force where he served for 4 years.

He was a man of many words and talents and once you met him he left a lasting impression whether it was good or bad. He said what he meant and meant what he said and there was never a gray area in between. In a lot of ways he was like EF Hutton, when he spoke he had a way of making sure everybody listened. He had a strong passion for the youth, community and cooking. It may be safe to say he had the bet Ribs in town.

He made it his life’s work to mentor and make a difference in not only his own children’s but in so many other kid’s lives by serving as a Boy Scout Leader of Troop 911 as well as Coaching the Brentwood Broncos.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Vivian M. Washington of the home, children, Marvell E. (Keisha) Washington of Snellville, GA, Yolanda R. Washington and Anthony Rashad Washington both of High Point, NC; four grandchildren, Jasmine Washington of Lithonia, GA, PFC Jamil Nesbitt (173 Airborne unit in Vicenza, Italy), Ariel Alexander of Greensboro, NC and Kamryn Washington of Snellville, GA; one brother, Lavesta (Stephanie) Washington of Fayetteville, GA; sisters, LuRetta (Donald) Smith of Kileen, TX, Sharon (Bennie) Mock, Janice Tillery, Zelda Washington, Inez (Jeff) Reese, April Washington all of High Point, NC and Dorsina Lee of Columbia, SC; one special lady, Aunt Lucille Anderson of High Point, NC; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. at Greater First United Baptist Church, 1409 Deep River Road. Interment will follow at Guil-Rand Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.

I’m sadden to hear of the passing of your love one, Jonathan and my deepest sympathies are with your family. His passing is a devastating experience for your family and words of comfort is most difficult to express to you. However, our Heavenly Father, Jehovah gives you the best comforts, because he knows the pain you’re feeling. He comforts you by offering Jonathan the resurrection hope. That is why he gave his son Jesus who sacrificed his life so Jonathan could have the resurrection hope. Acts 24:15 stated, “there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and unrighteous”. It is at that time that God will remember everything about Jonathan and bring him back. This a comforting to know he has this hope. So draw close to the god of all comfort, Jehovah because he will stregthen and sustain your family during this time of sorrow. ( for more info go to JW.org)

To the Washington Family. If I could is the words we say when we desire to change the unchangable. Unfortunately, you can not change what happened to Gene but you can focus on the legacy and the memories he left behind. I will always be grateful for the time he spent with the Brentwood Broncos because this is when my son learned to be a team player. Gene was an inspiration for my son in learning how to play football and to learn how to focus on his strengths not his weaknesses. Thank you for lending him to our children. Now it is time for you to find someone to comfort you through the days ahead. God made marriage and it was to last forever. He joined the two together to make one. He knows how empty and powerless you feel at the very moment of your loss of Gene. He says that He will be your God of all comfort and your Father of tender mercies who will deliver you throughout your trial and those to come. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4) Your pain is like a fresh wound and it will need time to heal; Jehovah God will fill in and close your wound of grief when you pour out your heart to him in prayer. Do not hesitate to tell him how you truly feel and He will give you and your family the strength beyond what is normal to make it through this journey. (2 Corinthians 4:7) God knows how you yearn to see your Gene again and he promises that, "all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out...."(John 5:28-29) Yes! God promises and He will do it. Gene will be among the millions who will live again and never die or grow old and have perfect health. (Revelation 21:3-5) This is not a passing thought but a promise made possible by the ransom of his Son, Christ Jesus. (John 3:16) Until then, throw your burdens on him, (God) and he will sustain you, never will he allow the righteous one to fall." (Psalms 55:22) Before things become unbearable follow these instructions: take your Bible, go to a quiet place, look up the scriptures quoted above, listen to God speak His words of comfort to you and truly you will experience the loving comfort and peace that only God can bring!

To the Washington Family, My heart aches for the loss of your loved one, Jonathan and I pray God will comfort you in this difficult time. Jonathan’s love and support spanned far beyond this High Point community and he will be sorely missed. Jonathan always had a word for you; whether it was admonishment or encouragement, he always left you with food for thought. Just thinking of some of our conversations tickles me as well as warms my heart; I will miss him immensely. He was always Jonathan, authentic and true to his beliefs. Those of us, who had the pleasure of knowing him, were so very blessed to have been a part of his life for so many years.

God will sustain you with his "right hand of righteousness" during this difficult time and through each passing day. Isaiah 41:10 says: "Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be anxious, for I am your God. I will fortify you, yes, I will help you, I will really hold on to you with my right hand of righteousness". Isaiah 41:13; I "am grasping your right hand, the One (God) saying to you,...'I will help you'". Please accept my sincere condolences. Always remember God loves you and he cares for you! (Psalm 36:7; 1 Peter 5:7)
