Herbert Gayle Middleton, 97, of Las Palomas, NM died in his home on April 14, 2018.  He was born February 19, 1921 about a mile southeast of Hope, Eddy County, New Mexico.  He was the oldest son of the late Ernest and May (Scoggin) Middleton. In 1938, he moved with his family to Hot Springs, NM and graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1939.  He married his high school sweetheart, Estella Ruth Howe, October 11, 1941.
Gayle was a World War II veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge with the 5th Armored Infantry Division.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served for many years as a deacon and trustee.  He owned Middleton Gas Company for sixteen years, and in 1969 he moved to his farm in Las Palomas, NM.  Gayle was a member and president of the school board for six years and a board member of Sierra Soil and Water Conservation District for 30 years.  He loved building things for his family and friends in his wood shop.  He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who always put his family first.  
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Estella Ruth (Howe) Middleton.  At the timer of her death, they had been married 69 years.  He was also preceded in death by his brother, Johnny, and sister-in-law, Helen (Frost) Middleton; sister, Ernestine, and brother-in-law, Scott Bumguardner; sister, Peggy Koenig; and sister, Clara May, and brother-in-law, Leonard Talbert.
Survivors include his brother-in-law, Paul Koenig; son, Bobby Middleton; daughters – Barbara Wiley and husband, Butch, Hazel Cain and husband, Russell, and Debbie Whitehead and husband, Gary; seven grandchildren – Lance Wiley and wife, Sara, Kelly Watson and husband, Greg, Lane Wiley, Kyle Birch and husband, Mike, DeeDee Fuss and husband, Dave, Erin Whitehead, and Sara Whitehead; ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at the First Baptist Church at 220 N. Broadway in Truth or Consequences, NM, with Pastor Dudley Bristow officiating.  Interment will follow at Vista Memory Gardens Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund of the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 329, T. or C., NM 87901.
