Mr. Cardell Eugene Saunders, Sr.  a resident of Raleigh, NC passed May 6, 2018 at Durham VA Medical Center.

Cardell Eugene Saunders, Sr. was born in Charleston, West Virginia on November 10, 1946 to Julius E. and Hattie D. Saunders. He departed this life to eternal rest from Durham Veterans Administration Medical Center on Sunday, May 6, 2018 after chronic respiratory failure consumed his last breath.

Cardell was educated in the Flint, Michigan Public School System, after his family moved from West Virginia early in his life, graduating from Central Community High School the 11th day of June 1965. A believer in education, he acquired an Associate in Applied Science - Banking Management from Charles Stewart Mott Community College; and, Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Public Administration degrees from the University of Michigan.

After graduating from high school, Cardell served in the United States Army as an order supply specialist for the 248th Supply Company and as a Nike Missile crewman. He was awarded medals in National Defense Service, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign, and Good Conduct achieving Honorable Discharge the 3rd day of March 1972.

His professional career included working at General Motors/Fischer Body; AC Spark Plug; Liberty Loan Company; Citizens Bank; the University of Michigan - Flint; Detroit College of Business; Davenport University; the Flint Public School System; Baker College; and finally, the District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent of Education from where he retired as a Program Claims Specialist in 2013.

Cardell was dedicated to his children: daughter, Denise and son, Gene. He was especially proud of them both. They were his pride and joy; his two greatest accomplishments. He will always be remembered as the earthly representative of their heavenly father who sacrificed unselfishly in all that he had to give them. In the end, a SALUTE was his final farewell to them.

Highly thought of, Cardell is affectionately remembered as "Sandy" and will be fondly missed by many. Mentor; handsome; stylish; kind; inspiring; intelligent; full of humor; a great friend, partner, and running buddy; a man's man; a big smile with a sunny personality; and, a good father and awesome dad are all used to describe him. He was an avid golfer for over 40+ years; an athlete, nicknamed Gillette, who received varsity letters in football, basketball, and track. He also set a high jump record in junior high school. Cardell had a love for DIY projects; the arts, especially music; and, spending time with his children. Some of his business and professional affiliations included being a 20 year volunteer with the Flint MLK Committee; fundraising for UNCF; the JayCees; serving as Toastmasters president of Greater Flint; Easter Seals; and, Boy Scouts.

Cardell was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Hattie Saunders; grandmother, Fannie Lee Miller; and brothers, Etson Thompson Saunders and Howard Franklin Saunders, Sr.

He leaves to cherish his memory dearly beloved and devoted children: daughter, Denise E'lan Saunders; son, Cardell Eugene Saunders, Jr. (Jessika); grandson, Eugene Nikolai Saunders; three sisters, Cynthia Ann Saunders-Brown; Shelia Saunders-Rattler; Rebecca Saunders-Abdul; brother, Julius E. Saunders, Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at 1:00 pm at American Cremation & Funeral Service (located at 1204 Person Street, Durham, NC 27703)

My awesome and most loved cousin has gained his wings in the Heavens above. I will always love him and will always treasure the talks, the laughter and everything you taught me. May all family find peace and comfort through this tough time in our lives. Cardell was one of a kind and will be greatly missed. I remember him coming down to visit with cousin Howard and mom said "Call him Sandy, I tease him with that", I responded, it wasn't nice and I would never do that. Even to this date, I never got the nerve to call him Sandy, even for fun.... Cousin Cardell, I love you, will miss you and you will always be in my heart. Love to the family and friends,
