Modenia Patricia Hager Simmons was born on November 23, 1930 in Gaston County, North Carolina to the late Magdelene Hager and Christopher McDonald.  She departed this life at Alexandria Place in Gastonia, North Carolina on Friday, May 25, 2018.  Modenia’s mother Magdelene died during her infancy, and in the spirit of dedication to family that characterized the Hager clan, she was adopted by her beloved Aunt Emma Hager who then became, “momma”.

Modenia was raised in a loving home and enjoyed the companionship of family and friends in the local community. Love’s Chapel centered her spiritual life, the local community schools were the source of her early education, and she enjoyed the theatre and convenience of   businesses “on the Hill”.

Upon graduation from high school, Modenia enrolled in Barber-Scotia College, Concord, North Carolina where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.  After completing her college studies and with the support of family, Modenia moved to Washington, D.C. where she was employed by the federal government throughout her entire working career. She retired in 1984 as a clerical supervisor.

During these years of employment in Washington, she met and married the love of her life, the late Edward Simmons.  While living in the Washington D.C. area, Simmons and Modenia cultivated strong and meaningful relationships with family and friends.

Modenia was kind, compassionate, practical, wise, and dignified, an excellent cook, a loving supporter of family, and a dedicated wife to her late husband of over sixty years, “Simmons”. During her retirement in Belmont, until her health failed, she was a faithful member of Love’s Chapel Presbyterian Church.

She leaves to mourn her loss and celebrate her life, first cousins; Ann L. Mitchell of Kings Mountain, Thomas D. Hager of Rockingham, Nathaniel Hager Sr. of Gastonia and, a daughter-by-choice, Sharon Hager-Lowery and husband Brian of Concord; a host of nieces and nephews; and many cousins and devoted friends.

Please accept my sincere regrets for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Revelation 21:4 says that God will wipe every tear from our eyes and death and pain will be no more. This is especially comforting since we know this scripture has to be referring to the earth because these things don't exist in heaven.

Accept our heartfelt sympathy in your recent loss. May you find strength and comfort from the words of Nahum 1:7 Which reads: “Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of distress. He is mindful of those seeking refuge in him.” Yes, our loving God is there for us if we allow him to help (1 John 5:14). He didn't intend for us to grow old and die. He thus has made the SURE promise of a resurrection RIGHT HERE ON EARTH when it is restored to a beautiful paradise (Psalms 37:9-11, 29; Acts 24:15; Isaiah 55;11). Can you see yourself welcoming back to life your loved ones? What a joy it will bring all of us! You can go online to JW.ORG and find out more about this resurrection.
