Warren Reginald "W.R.", 70, was born on April 10, 1948 in Gastonia, NC to the late Benjamin Satchel and Louise Barrett Perkins. He transitioned at Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia, NC on July 5, 2018.
Warren was a proud 1966 graduate of Highland Senior High School in Gastonia, North Carolina. He then enrolled in collegiate courses prior to being drafted to serve in the United States Armed Forces. Warren chose to complete his obligation in the United States Army, and was assigned for Basic Training at the Fort Bragg Army Base near Fayetteville, North Carolina in 1969. After graduating from Basic Training and completing a brief tour in Fort Dix, New Jersey, Warren was assigned to the 3rd Armored Division and stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. While in the Army, he served as a unit supply specialist and represented the U.S. Army as a member of the 3rd Armored Division Basketball Team. A loyal soldier, Warren was honorably discharged from the Army in 1971 after completing his two-year service obligation.
In April of 1973, he married Cheryl Odom Perkins, his childhood sweetheart and the love of his life. From this union, a daughter, Adrienne, was born in December of 1974. In 1982, Warren completed his Bachelor of Science degree at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in Durham, North Carolina.
Although Warren was employed in many fields from the 1970’s until his retirement in 2005, he was most committed to and enjoyed his careers in recreation management and law enforcement. He particularly loved mentoring and interacting with youth as Assistant Director at the Gaston Boys’ and Girls’ Club in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Among all of his accomplishments, Warren was most proud of becoming the first African-American Chief of Police in Gaston County, as he served as Director of Campus Safety and Security at Gaston College from 1993 to 1995.
At the early age of 12, Warren was baptized by Rev. C.S. Hall at Friendship Baptist Church (currently Friendship Christian Church) and continued to be a life-time member of Friendship Christian Church. He was also a Lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.
Warren had a wealth of knowledge that he enjoyed sharing with his family members and friends. Furthermore, Warren closely followed Historically Black College and University (HBCU) sports teams and was a major fan of and season pass ticket holder for his alma mater’s football team, the NCCU Eagles. He had also been a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys since the age of ten.
Warren (also affectionately known as “Perk”, “Matt Dillion”, “Chief”, and “Six-Eight”) is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Cheryl and his daughter, Adrienne Perkins, sisters Brenda Ballard (Daryl “Tony”), Yvonne Perkins, and Joycelyn Jamison (Michael), aunt Callie Bush, special cousins Paulette Jackson and Danny Barrett (Alison), adored his adopted “son” Jonathan Gordon and adopted “daughter” Kia Mitchell, host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends whom he loved dearly.

We're so sorry to hear you are mourning the recent loss of your loved one. May you find strength and comfort from the words of Psalms 46:1 which reads: "God is our refuge and strength, A help that is readily found in times of distress."
Our loving God is there for us if we ask for his help (1 John 5:14). He didn't intend for us to grow old and die. He thus has made the SURE promise of a resurrection RIGHT HERE ON EARTH when it is restored to a beautiful paradise (Psalms 37:9-11, 29; Acts 24:15; Isaiah 55;11).
Can you see yourself welcoming back to life your loved ones? What a joy it will bring all of us.
You can go online to JW.ORG and find out more about this resurrection.
~ R&R Lopez
May the wonderful memories of your loved one continue to provide a measure of comfort to you, until God’s promises are fulfilled. ( Isaiah 25:8, Psalms 37:11, 29)~ D Marie
