MSGT-Ret. John Will Hairston Jr., 87, died August 5, 2018. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, August 10, 2018 at Pine Hall Baptist Church in Pine Hall, NC. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

John Will was born May 20, 1931 to the late Reverend John Will and Elsie Lorene Jones Hairston in Randolph County, Cedar Township, NC.  He was the oldest of 5 children.  He was held accountable for his younger siblings (who were often mischievous) and sometimes took the blame for their antics.  As a youth, he had a paper route and received an award for his diligence.  He was active in the Boy Scouts and became an eagle scout.  He also had a resonant baritone singing voice and was active in barbershop quartet while serving in the military (winning awards also).  He was a member of the Charles Love Singers of Kansas, Mo.  He sang in church and high school choirs.  He enjoyed singing all of his life.

He and his brothers made a big sacrifice to forgo high school to work on his family farm after its purchase.  Following his father’s death, he joined the military and was active from 1952 until his retirement in 1970, having achieved the rank of Master Sergeant.  His military career led him to several assignments located in Greenland, Okinawa, Japan, South Korea and Germany, as well as several states in the USA.  Upon his final retirement from the military, he worked several years with the Associates in South Bend, IN and also started his own franchise of Service Masters and continued for several years.  Upon his final retirement, he turned his attention to good works including the Salvation Army and other local organizations that helped people in need.  After the passing of his wife, Vivian, he met Rita Hill, who had also lost her mate.  As they shared their grief together, they began to realize that their relationship had become more than just a friendship.  On June 9, 2001, John married Rita Hill and they formed a wonderful bond of unending love and companionship that consistently lasted throughout their marriage, side by side until his final moments.  They worked together through their faith and their church activities.  John married the lovely Vivian Alease Rousseau December 12, 1954.  To their union his children was born: Alecia Lorraine Hairston Madison of Winston Salem, NC, John William Hairston, who preceded him; Brian Keith Hairston of Boston, MA and Douglas Scott Hairston (Jocelyn) of Avon, IN. John was also preceded by his parents, and his younger brothers, Charles Murphy Hairston (Charlene); Bernard Jones Hairston (Dorothy) and Travis Alexander Hairston. He leaves the following family members to celebrate his life, accomplishments and cherish his memory: children; Alicia H. Madison of Winston Salem, NC, Brian K. Hairston of Boston, MA, Douglas S. Hairston (Jocelyn) of Avon, IN; his grandchildren; David A. Hairston, Yara Elaine and Nile Andrews, Jacob Alexander, Leah C. God cares for the brokenhearted; Psalm 34:18 assures us that he is close to them. Psalm 147:3 says: "He heals the brokenhearted; He binds up their wounds". God strengthens us by giving us "the power beyond what is normal" to make it through each passing day. Psalm 46:1; "God is our refuge and strength". Please accept my sincere condolences. Always remember God loves you and he cares for you! (Psalm 36:7; 1 Peter 5:7)
