MR. WILLIAM SAMUEL BRACEY, better known as “Sam” to most and “Cool Papa” to his nephews, nieces, and grandchildren,  was the son of the late Ulysses and Pannie Bracey, born January 31, 1945 in Bracey, VA.  He passed away peacefully August 18, 2018, surrounded by his wife and daughter at his side; who took care of him the last four months of his life.  He was also preceded in death by his two brothers- Thomas and Willie Bracey.

At an early age Sam was baptized and joined Roanoke Zion RZUA Church, Bracey, VA.  He attended Mecklenburg County Public Schools.

Sam worked as a farmer for many years.  He relocated to Washington, DC where he worked as a custodian for the public school system.  His last place of employment was with Butler Lumber Company, Lawrenceville, VA.

Sam was known for whistling songs, singing the blues, and before his accident he was an awesome guitar player.  He was a loving person who gave to many and he was always there for others in their time of need.  On any given day you could catch Sam repairing a car or truck, fixing something in the house, or working in the yard or garden, all while either whistling a tune, singing, or laughing and talking as he worked.  He also enjoyed watching wrestling and hanging out with family and friends.

Sam is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Windless Bracey of the home; four children- Sammy (Irish) Windless, LaCrosse, VA; William Bracey, Danville, VA; Tina (Maurice) Johnson, LaCrosse, VA, and Samantha Bracey of the home; six grandchildren- Jamar Windless, Irish Bacon, SeDarius (Denise) Bracey, Valencia (Marck) Geneus, Tamahria Bracey and Kamyra Bracey; three great-grandchildren-Antonio and Serenity Windless and Geneah Geneus; three sisters- Ida (Cecil) Coleman and Geraldine Powell, all of LaCrosse, VA and Magnolia Dunson, South Hill, VA; one brother- George (Annie Louise) Macklin, Richmond, VA; sister-in-law, Barbara Stith, Kenbridge, VA; devoted friends- Ernest Dunson, Mark Owens, and Cecil Lee Coleman, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

To the family of Uncle Sammy God give you strength during your time of morning and sorrow. For his labor on earth was hard and now his reward is in heaven to be with God. Weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning.

We're so sorry to hear you are suffering the loss of your dear loved one. May you find strength and some comfort in the words found in Nahum 1:7 which reads: ”Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of distress. He is mindful of those seeking refuge in him.” Our loving God cares about us and is ready to bring us comfort if we allow him (1John 5:14). He also has made the provision of a resurrection RIGHT HERE ON EARTH when it is restored into a beautiful paradise. Can you see yourself welcoming back to life your dear loved one?
