Mrs. Evelyn Doris Travis affectionately known as “Dot” by family, peacefully entered eternal rest, Sunday, September 30, 2018, surrounded by the love of family at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Charlotte, NC.  She was the daughter of the late Neb and Mable Cypress, born September 18, 1940 in Mecklenburg County, VA.  Evelyn was also preceded in death by a son, Eugene Barber and her siblings, Ruby Tanner, Avon Logan, James Cypress, Lucy Whitaker, Leonard Cypress, Sr., and Cora Neil.

At an early age she was baptized and joined the former Bethel Grove CME Church, Blackridge, VA.  She attended the Mecklenburg County Public School.

Evelyn later moved to Trenton, NJ, where she married the late William Morris Barber, Sr. and to this union four children were born.  Marcia, William, Lisa, and Eugene.  As time progressed, she later married the late James Westly Travis.

During her years as a native of Trenton, NJ, Evelyn completed her education and received her high school diploma.  She furthered her education at Mercer County Community College.  Evelyn was employed with General Motors, President of Travis Funeral Home and Florist, a Notary Republic, Real Estate Investor, member of the Eastern Star, Daughter of Isis, and Wal-Mart.

During her move to Fort Mill, SC, Evelyn worked for the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System for a short time, but later retired from Wal-Mart.

Evelyn leaves this life remembered as an amazing person, awesome mother, grandmother, and caregiver.  She would be the first in line to assist, whether it be monetary, advice, or just time to listen.  She enjoyed making floral arrangements, cooking, candy crush, word search, and let’s not forget her soap operas.  What a precious gift given to us.  She will be treasured and remembered with an abundance of love.

Evelyn leaves to cherish her memory three children- Marcia Barber, Fort Mill, SC; William Morris Barber, Trenton, NJ; Lisa (Phillip) Owens, Charlotte, NC.; four grandchildren- William M. Barber, III, Destiney J. Barber, Sierra C. Owens, and Evan P. Owens; four great-grandchildren; sister- Marjorie Carter; brother- Shirley (Marguerite) Cypress, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

We are saddened to know you are grieving the recent loss of your loved one. You can find comfort in the words found in Psalms 34:18 which reads: “ Jehovah is close to the brokenhearted; He saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Our loving God cares about us and is ready to bring us comfort if we allow him (1John 5:14). He also has made the SURE promise of a resurrection RIGHT HERE ON EARTH when it is restored into a beautiful paradise. See and imagine yourself welcoming back to life your dear loved one? Find out more about this resurrection online at JW.ORG

May the wonderful memories of your loved one continue to provide a measure of comfort to you, until God’s promises are fulfilled. ( Isaiah 25:8, Psalms 37:11, 29)
