Mr. Curtis Lee (Kur-lee) Large

“Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flowers, and is cut down; he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not” Job 14: 1&2 (Curtis’ favorite Scripture).

Mr. Curtis Lee Large, the 2nd child of 10 children, was born to the proud parents of Mr. & Mrs. John & Irene (James) Large, Sr. June 18, 1943 in Holmes County in the Shady Grove Community. His father preceded him in death.

In April 1967, he was united in holy matrimony to Shirley Ann Johnson, and to this union, two children were born; Curtis LaMoney and Cory LeMente Large.

At an early age, Curtis was baptized at Durant M. B. Church and began his early educational training in the Holmes County Training School – later known as Durant Attendance Center, now William-Sullivan High School. Because of his love for football, and playing the game, he earned a football scholarship to Okalona Jr. College – and according to him, he was the best they had! Upon graduating from Okalona, he enrolled and graduated from MI (MS Industrial College) in 1965, earning his Bachelor of Science Degree.

Curtis became employed with the Holmes County School System as a Science Teacher at Tchula Attendance Center, now SV Marshall High School where he taught for 30 years and anxiously and proudly retired in May 1995.

He leaves this life with the memories of him deeply embedded in the hearts and minds of his mom; Mrs. Irene Large of Durant, MS, 2 sons; Curtis (Samantha) and Cory (LaToya) Large of Atlanta, GA, 5 grandchildren; Malcolm Xavier, Malcolm JaMal, Cameron Douglas, Courtney, and Samaria, 9 siblings; John Large, Jr., (Barbara) of Grand Rapids, MI, Diane Brown (Louis) of Marreo, LA, Rosie Brown (Theodore) of Chicago, IL, Earnest Large (Cathy) of Grand Rapids, MI, Henry Paul Large (Virgie) of Durant, MS, Terry Large of Durant, MS, Earnestine Lockett (Daniel) of Grand Rapids, MI, Jimmy Large (Angela) of Hattiesburg, MS, Brenda Bankhead (Johnny) of Durant, MS, aunts and uncles; Claretha James, DeLorsie Harrie (Claude), Jessie Mae Weathersby, and Robert James, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
