Funeral services for Bernard Owens Sr., 56, of 190 Crawford Road, Allendale, SC will be held 12:00 noon Saturday, February 27, 2016 at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Daniel Latimer officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Mr. Bernard Owens, Sr. was born on April 2, 1959 to the late Ben Allen and Claritha Owens-Brown in Allendale, South Carolina. Bernard’s grandparents, the late Hansford and Virginia Ford Owens played a major role in raising him from a baby. After the death of his grandparents, his sisters Iva Lee Wesley and Geneva Kearse, stepped up and took on the role as his guardians.

At an early age Bernard was baptized and joined the St. Mark Baptist Church in Allendale, South Carolina where he remained a member until his passing. Bernard attended the public schools of Allendale County and graduated from Allendale-Fairfax High School in 1978. After graduating from high school, Bernard joined the United States Army where he served several years abroad and he also attended some college while serving in the military. After returning home from active duty, Bernard served with the United States Army National Guard in Barnwell, South Carolina. He was employed at Collum’s Lumber Products, LLC in Allendale, South Carolina for over 30 years. Bernard was also an active member of the American Legion.

He was joined in Holy Matrimony to Carolyn Witherspoon on June 25, 1987 and to this union two children were born: Sha’Novia and Bernard, II.

Bernard leaves to cherish his fond memories: his wife, Carolyn Witherspoon-Owens; his two children: Sha’Novia Owens and Bernard Owens, II all of Allendale, SC; eight sisters: Iva Lee Wesley of Allendale, SC, Geneva Kearse of Fayetteville, NC, Stephanie Brown, Beverly Brown, and Wanda Brown of Winston-Salem, NC, Sharita (Derrick) Willis of Columbia, SC, Bridget Kirby and Bertha (Russell) Freeman both of Newark, NJ; four brothers: David Owens of Allendale, SC, Joseph Brown, Jr and Hansford Brown both of Winston-Salem, NC and Ben Allen, Jr. of Newark, NJ; two stepmothers: Cynthia Allen-Murray of Wedgefield, SC and Barbara Williams of Newark, NJ; and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 26, 2016 from 12:00 noon until 7:00 pm at the funeral home

Friends may call at the residence of his wife, Carolyn Owens at 190 Crawford Road or at the funeral home.
